Thermal's mica band heaters are made to heat cylinders, such as pipes, barrels, or nozzles of injection molding and extruding machines. Mica band heaters are constructed by winding a resistance wire or ribbon around a sheet of mica, sandwiching that element between two other sheets of mica, and then forming coated steel around the assembly.

Mica-type band heaters have several advantages over other types of band heaters, but the thing that makes them the most used heater in the plastics industry is the combination of reasonable high-watt density capabilities, reasonably high temperature capabilities (900 degrees Fahrenheit), good efficiency, good lifetime and low cost.

Flanges vs. Straps - Which is better?
Clamping straps provide the best closure method to enhance mica band heater life because the band heater is forced into more intimate contact with the part requiring heat, lowering the external and internal heating temperatures.

Flanged mica band heaters, while not providing as good a contact with the barrel, may be much easier to install in some applications.

Check to see how close your band heater is to the maximum watt density. The closer to the curve, the more you need the benefits of the strapped band. The further away from the curve, the more likely a flanged heater would be acceptable. Feel free to use our Wattage Calculator.
